Self portrait in acrylic I did in May 2016
About me
Depression, anxiety, chronic pain, grief, social phobias, guilt, these are my constant companions. I’m not here to whine, preach, or tell some sanitized, after-school-special-style tale about overcoming illness and adversity. We all face adversity. That’s the shite left out of the users manual to life.
To help me therapeutically and for pure pleasure I have been writing both fiction and non since early childhood.
With my new light-weight laptop and adjustable lap desk I am able to write while resting on a heating pad. This personal disability-conducive set up has made me confident I can now pursue writing again which is such a deep relief❤
I am thrilled to be writing again and just want a place to tell a few stories and feel like I’m among the living again. I hope you enjoy my blithering-cathartic-prose. I swear a lot, so that’s extra enjoyable for most😋
In 2008 my children’s book about curling, The Adventures of Trefor the Curling Rock, was published. Along with the book I invented a curling novelty item called a Broom Charm. You can check it out http://www.trefor.ca
Soon after publication I developed severe back pain as well as severe nerve pain in my left leg. As a result I have issues sitting for more than 15 minutes. To temporarily replace writing, when I had an even shorter sitting tolerance than now, as my creative outlet I began learning to paint and draw as I could stand at an easel or lay back on a heating pad to work.
My art hobby is now hardly temporary. I practice art every single day and I can’t imagine ever giving it up . I work mainly with acrylic ink, acrylic, pencil crayons, ink, and alcohol ink. I also enjoy mixed media.
I have a wonderful teacher at http://www.grasbyartstudio.com called Teresa Grasby. She has been both a mentor and a friend and I cannot thank her enough for the patience she’s had for me and my bizarre ideas.
I spend a lot of time practicing in my home studio. Now I can’t imagine how I ever survived without making visual art and I’m thrilled to be back at writing too. Finding passion makes life that much sweeter🍭
